Upgrade allows Software Remote applications to launch and run faster

As a student studying computer and information technology, Brady Morgan routinely needs to use advanced analytics software like SPSS to complete projects for his courses. But that doesn’t require him to spend extra time on campus.

A recent upgrade to Software Remote means Morgan can continue to access more than 100 different software programs remotely – but the upgrade allows the service to load faster and run more smoothly than the in the past.

“The new service definitely both loads and runs faster than the old service,” says Morgan. “I have not experienced any issues logging into Software Remote since the change.”

To use Software Remote visit goremote.itap.purdue.edu. Students looking for optimum performance of Software Remote should consider downloading and installing Citrix Receiver software free from www.citrix.com. Instructions on how to access the service can be found by clicking here.

Byron Reed, director of Learning Spaces for ITaP, says Citrix Receiver users who add software titles to their Favorites list in the new Software Remote will now see those titles listed in their Windows Start menus, although no software has actually been downloaded to their personal computer. Software titles will continue to be available via web browser as well with the new system.

“With the Citrix Receiver, you’ll then be able to access those software applications from your Windows Start menu or by searching for it in the search bar,” Reed says.

Software Remote’s suite of titles includes popular software packages like MathWorks MATLAB, SPSS and SAS, along with multiple design, statistical and computational packages.

More information about software available at Purdue, including free anti-virus software, can be found at the ITaP software download site.
