New online grading tool to be focus of Tech Today

How to use Gradescope, an online grading tool, to streamline grading and improve fidelity will be the topic of ITaP’s next Tech Today event on Nov. 2.

Ed Berger, an associate professor of engineering education and mechanical engineering, will discuss how Gradescope’s grading rubrics have helped him and his teaching assistants become better graders, while also saving time, improving efficiency and impacting learning.

“When students see their grade, they see how the rubric relates to things we told them were important on the syllabus,” says Berger. “It gives us a really powerful way to communicate with students – not just about the numerical values of what they’ve gotten right and gotten wrong, but the details of the specific learning objectives on which they did well, and those on which they need to do a little more work.”

ITaP has recently signed an enterprise level contract with Gradescope, making the tool available to all instructors with support from the Instructional Data Processing team (idp@purdue.edu) to scan exams for grading.

Faculty and staff are invited to learn more about Gradescope during Tech Today, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in Grissom Hall, Room 102.  Seating is limited and registration is recommended.

Educational technologists will be on hand to answer questions about Gradescope. Those unable to attend can contact tlt@purdue.edu with questions or to request a one-on-one consultation.
