Instructors should save student data from Blackboard, as campus transitions to Brightspace

Instructors who use Blackboard Learn will need to download and archive any student data – grades, graded coursework and exam scores – before access to Blackboard ends in August.

Access to Blackboard Learn will end for all instructors on Aug. 24, the first Monday of the fall semester, as Purdue moves to the D2L Brightspace learning management system. Instructors should have already begun the process of moving course content from Blackboard (to get started, follow these instructions).

Current guidelines require that faculty gradebooks be kept for five years after course completion; graded coursework and final exams should be kept for one year in order to respond to grade appeals.

Student grade and assignment data must be stored securely in keeping with FERPA guidelines. Options meeting these guidelines include on an instructor’s Purdue-provided career account (access instructions can be found here); for other options, contact your academic IT department.

Student data should not be stored on personal computers or devices, or on commercial cloud storage like Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. For more information, see Purdue’s guidelines on electronically stored information.
